Courtney Dauwalter Returns to Hardrock With Something New

The GOAT steps back onto the start line of the Hardrock 100.

Running

Some athletes chase records. Courtney Dauwalter chases the version of herself that only shows up when things fall apart.

On July 10, the GOAT of ultrarunning steps back onto the start line of the Hardrock 100 — one of the most brutal, beautiful, and unforgiving 100-mile races on the planet. 10,000+ metres of climbing. An average elevation over 3,350 metres. A course that loops through Colorado's San Juan Mountains like it's daring you to keep up. And this year, Courtney's doing it her way: no pacers, no safety net, just her, the trail, and, if she's lucky, a few imaginary friends along the way.

She won't be the only SunGod athlete out there chasing history. Fresh off his UTMB win, Tom Evans lines up for his first-ever Hardrock 100 — a rookie in the San Juans, but very much not a rookie to winning. Two athletes, two very different relationships with this race, one iconic loop.

And this week, it all collides with something SunGod has been building with Courtney for the last six months: the Classics4 PRO.

Why Hardrock, Again and Again?

For most runners, one Hardrock finish is a life achievement. For Courtney, it's a place she keeps returning to — and when we asked her why, the answer wasn't about the finish line at all.

"There are so many things to love about Hardrock," Courtney told us. "The course is an absolutely beautiful loop of huge mountains covered in wildflowers. And it is such a tough course! "

"The altitude, the climbing, the descending, the weather. All of it creates a really fun puzzle to play with and test ourselves on. Plus, the community that gathers in the San Juans for the event is really special."

That's the thing about Hardrock; it's not just a race, it's a puzzle with new pieces every year, wrapped in one of the most stunning alpine environments in North America. It's also exactly why Courtney's love of ultrarunning has never really been about competition. It's about exploration.

"I guess if I had to pick, my favorite trail might be the one I have never been on,"

she said, when we asked about her favourite trails in the world.

"I love the feeling of exploration and not knowing exactly what the view will look like around the next corner. Seeing new places with my feet brings me a lot of joy."

That mindset, chasing the unknown corner, not the known outcome, is the same spirit behind what's happening on course this weekend.

No Pacers. No Plan. Just the Mountain.

Most elite runners at this distance lean on pacers to get them through the darkest miles. This year, Courtney's stripping that away entirely.

"This year we decided it sounded fun and interesting to simplify everything and try to make it around the loop without pacers," she explained. "Kevin will crew and out on course it will just be my feet, the mountains, and maybe some imaginary friends if we're lucky!"

It's a small sentence with a big meaning: less support, more raw problem-solving, more time spent exactly where Courtney does her best work — deep in the discomfort, figuring it out alone.

Which brings us to the Pain Cave.

The Pain Cave: Where the Cracks Let the Gold In

As usual, Courtney has a limited Edition colourway for the race. A frame bright and bold with gold fractures running through the frame, deliberate and unmissable. They're not decoration. They're the entire idea.

"The Pain Cave is this incredible place full of opportunity where we can all find progress and improvement if we lean into the toughest moments," Courtney said. "When we get out our chisel and go to work, we're chipping away at those walls to find more strength, more potential, and more capability. I'm really excited to represent this idea with the gold cracks all over the new frames as a reminder that the good stuff is just one chisel swing away. When we're given the chance to spend some time in our Pain Caves, we should break into those walls and find some gold."

Cracks are where your potential starts. Not a flaw. A fault line, and on the other side of it, the good stuff.

Introducing the Classics4 PRO

This philosophy is baked into the product itself. Six months ago, we sat down with Courtney and asked a simple question: what would you change about your favourite pair of SunGods, if you were about to run 100+ miles through the mountains?

Our original product, the SunGod Classics4, enters a new era of performance. Developed with trail-running royalty Courtney Dauwalter, the new Classics4 PRO takes an iconic everyday style and elevates your experience with the grip, hold and stability of our wraparound performance range — remodelled arm fins, temple grip and rubberised nose pads. No more deliberation, no more compromises. This is the one design that does it all.

It's the Classics you already know, enhanced with everything Courtney needed to take on Hardrock. Built from real feedback, tested in the world's toughest conditions, made for when you're ready to level up.

Tech Truths

  • New remodelled performance arm fins — maximising grip for stability and security on any head shape with our new ergonomically tuned arm fins. Trickle-down technology from our Velans 2.

Two Athletes, One Historic Loop

While Courtney runs her own version of Hardrock — stripped back, self-reliant, chasing gold in the cracks — Tom Evans arrives with a completely different story: a UTMB champion stepping into the unknown for the very first time on one of ultrarunning's most respected courses.

Different races within the same race. Same relentless pursuit of what's possible when things get hard.

Follow along all week as we bring you inside the San Juans — the build-up, the start line, and the moment both athletes cross the finish of one of the toughest 100-mile races in the world.
